Itinerary Self-drive tour  Proposal

Johannesburg – Panorama Route – Blyde River Canyon – Hazyview – Kruger National Park – Private Concession in the South of the Kruger National Park – Swaziland incl. a Swazi village – Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Game Reserve – St. Lucia Wetlands Park – Durban – Port Elizabeth – Tsitsikamma National Park – Garden Route – Cango Caves – Ostrich Farm – Route 62 – Cape Town – Cape Peninsula – Wine Farm – Cape Town Airport

Day 1

Johannesburg – Private Game Reserve Edeni

On arrival pick up car at Johannesburg Airport. In case you do not want to stay overnight in Johannesburg travel pass the coalmining town Witbank to the trout area of Dullstroom, where you could make a short break. Continue via Lydenburg direction Tzaneen. You will arrive at the Private Game Reserve Edeni for lunch and can relax thereafter at the pool.

In the afternoon you will do an approx. 3-hour game drive with a professional ranger and tracker in an open safari vehicle. It is a very exciting feeling to be so close to the game as this is BIG 5 country!

Overnight in the Edeni Private Game Reserve in a luxury bushcamp in Meru tents with inside toilet / shower (separated by a canvas wall). Lights are activated by solar panels. Each of the 14 tents has it's own wooden deck overlooking the Makhutswi river. Full Board + including 2 game drive activities.

Day 2

Edeni Private Game Reserve – Blyde River Canyon – Hazyview

With sunrise you will do another 3-hour game drive, hoping to see more of the BIG 5 (lion, elephant, leopard, buffalo, rhino) or any other of the many game species. After a sumptuous breakfast drive over the Abel Erasmus pass to the grandiose Blyde River Canyon with its "Three Rondavels". The canyon is about 800 meters deep and you have an unforgettable view. Drive further to visit the Bourkes Luck Potholes, one of the stranger results of water erosion, a fantasia of rock shapes and colours. The next stop is God's Window from where you have an absolute magnificent, unobstructed view to the "Lowveld" 1000 m beneath you.

Thereafter visit the historical mining town of Pilgrim's Rest. After a short walk through the village carry on through the forest town of Graskop to Hazyview.

Day 3

Early morning you enter the world famous Kruger National Park that has more animal species than any other game park in the world. You will try to spot buffalos, hippos, lions, leopards and cheetahs.

Overnight in a camp in the Kruger National Park.

Day 4

Krüger National Park – Kingdom of Swaziland

With sunrise do another game drive. Leave the Kruger National Park via the Malelane Gate and enter the Kingdom of Swaziland, which is also known as "Little Switzerland". The road takes you past mountains and through forests and the capital Mbabane into the Ezulwini Valley. Here you may want to visit a craft market. In the evening try your luck in a casino.

Day 5

Swaziland – Hluhluwe/Umfolozi National Park

Your next stop will be the 96 453 ha large Hluhluwe/Umfolozi Park, that was opened 30th April 1895 and is therefore the oldest game reserve in Africa. You will drive through the beautiful, hilly to mountainous sub-tropical region and look out for rhinos, giraffes, elephants, nyalas (antelopes), etc.

Day 6

Hluhluwe/Umfolozi National Park – Durban

After an early morning game drive, leave this game park in order to visit a traditional Zulu village and get to know something about hut building, traditional clothing, the brewing of beer and the family tree. To round off the visit the people of this village will perform traditional dances. Thereafter drive through the hilly, subtropical Zululand passing endless sugarcane plantations. On arrival in Durban make a sightseeing tour and visit the Indian market.

Day 7

Durban – Port Elizabeth – Tsitsikamma National Park – Knysna

Drop off car at Durban domestic airport for your flight to Port Elizabeth (flight not included and to be booked in advance). Take delivery of the hired car at the airport and proceed to the Tsitsikamma National Park. Here you may take a short walk to the suspension bridge (approx. 45 minutes). Carry on via the Bloukrans Pass and Nature's Valley to Knysna.

Overnight in Knysna in a small hotel or guesthouse. B&B

Day 8

Garden Route

Travel to "Robberg Nature Reserve" where you can hike for about 1 to 3 hours. "Robberg" is a peninsula, which is protruding into the ocean. From here you have an exquisite view over the bay of Plettenberg. During the whale season (July to November) an optional boat trip for whale watching can be booked in advance.

Day 9

Garden Route

Today you could do a 3 to 4-hour excursion to the "Featherbed Nature Reserve". A boat will take you to the reserve and a Unimog vehicle with trailers to the viewpoint on top. On the Bushbuck Trail (about 2.2 km) you hike back towards the pick-up point. The boat will take you back to Knysna. You may want to walk through the town, visit the waterfront or try the famous Knysna oysters.

Day 10

Garden Route – Cango Caves – Ostrich Farm – Oudtshoorn

Today you drive to Oudtshoorn, the feather capital of the world. You will drive through Wilderness and George up the Outeniqua Mountain Pass. Visit an ostrich farm and the Cango Caves, where you will have guided tours.

Day 11

Oudtshoorn – Swellendam – Cape Town

From Oudtshoorn you travel via the Robinson Pass to Mossel Bay where you could stop at the 500-year-old Post Office Tree and at the Diaz Museum. In the olden days seaman used the tree to deposit letters for their folks at home. Those letters would be taken by passing ships to the country of their destination. Your next stop is the historical town of Swellendam. After having passed Lowry's Pass you will soon reach Cape Town.

Day 12

Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden – Cape Peninsula

Today visit the Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, which is considered to be one of the most beautiful Botanical Gardens in the world. Continue via Fishhoek to Simonstown where you should visit a penguin colony. Thereafter drive to Cape Point and "Cape of Good Hope", the most Southwesterly point of Southern Africa. From here travel along Chapman's Peak Drive with it's prominent cliff face on the opposite site of Hout Bay. Pass the popular beaches of Camps Bay, Clifton, and Sea Point.

Day 13

Table Mountain – Winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek

Weather permitting you could make a cable car trip to the top of Table Mountain from where you have a breathtaking view of "Lions Head", "Signal Hill", the harbour and the City of Cape Town. Thereafter visit a wine estate near Stellenbosch where you could undertake a guided cellar tour including wine tasting. Travel to the historical towns of Stellenbosch und Franschhoek.

Day 14

Victoria & Alfred Waterfront – Airport

Visit today the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront where you will find a flea market, aquarium and a large number of restaurants and shops that cater for all tastes. Thereafter travel to Bloubergstrand from where you have a panoramic view of Table Mountain, Lions Head and Cape Town with its harbour. The tour ends today at Cape Town airport, where you will drop off the car.
